Our colony was founded in 1634, by George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore.
In 1632, King Charles I of England granted a charter to George Calvert, yielding him proprietary rights to a region east of the Potomac River in exchange for a share of the income derived from the land. The land was named Maryland, in honor Henrietta Maria, the queen consort of Charles I.
However before the settlement began, George Calvert died and was succeeded by his son Cecilius. He concluded that the colony would provide religious freedom and become a safehaven for Roman Catholics .
The Native Americans were peaceful and welcomed the colonists. The colonists gave the Yaocomico Indians cloths, hatchets, hoes, farming tools in exchange for the right to settle in their land. The Yaocomico Indians allowed the English settlers to live in their houses, a type of long house called a witchott.
